Pediatric Cardiology

Pediatric Cardiology
In our pediatric Cardiology Department; Diagnosis and treatment of congenital and acquired (later seen) heart diseases in childhood are carried out by our specialist physicians.

Childhood heart diseases are divided into two main groups: congenital and acquired (seen later). Unlike adults, the most common heart diseases in children are congenital.
The probability of delivering a child with congenital heart disease is 8 per 1000 births for each expectant mother. Accordingly, approximately 10,000 to 15,000 children are born with congenital heart disease in our country annually.

Today, it is possible to examine the heart of the baby between the 16th and 20th weeks of  the pregnancy and to determine major cardiac anomalies in risky pregnancies with the "Fetal Echocardiography" method, which is applied by specialists trained in this field.

We work with a coordinated team in the treatment of congenital heart diseases.

The treatment of congenital heart diseases requires very special and meticulous care. The successful treatment of pediatric cardiac patients requires an experienced team consisting of specialists in pediatric cardiology, pediatric cardiac surgery and pediatric anesthesia.

In our Pediatric Heart Health Center, a team of experienced pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and anesthesiologists who have been trained specifically in the diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart diseases work together.

We are proud to have been serving families with congenital heart disease patients for more than 20 years with our experienced team and strong technical equipment, in making early and accurate diagnoses,  and timely planning and implementation, of correct treatments.

For pediatric heart health, we successfully implement the current modern therapeutic procedures in the world.

Until about 50 years ago, it was not possible to perform any corrective surgery on children born with serious heart diseases. However, as a result of the studies and advances made in this field, especially in the last 30 years, many serious heart diseases can be intervened at an early stage and it is possible for these patients to live a normal or close to normal life.

Today, surgical treatment of many congenital heart diseases can be successfully and fully performed in our centers where modern congenital heart surgery is carried out. The vital risk in these surgeries varies between 1% and 10%.

Today, except for small heart holes that do not prevent the growth of the patient and / or have the possibility of self-closing,  for mild and non-progressive vascular stenosis or some problems related to heart valves, the treatment of the most important congenital heart diseases is, surgery.

After surgical treatment, almost all children with relatively simple congenital heart diseases and some of the complex patients reach adulthood. In patients with more than one and more complex problems where one or more chambers of the normal heart or the main vessels and / or valves originating from the heart do not develop, although correction is not always possible, auxiliary surgeries are applied to the majority of these patients, which allow them to live their lives in better conditions.

Naturally, these patients are at higher risk before and after surgery. Today, studies in organ transplantation or genetic engineering provide a better hope for such patients, but these studies have not yet reached the desired level.

We successfully perform diagnostic and therapeutic angiography procedures on pediatric patients, including newborns.

Nowadays, the role of interventional cardiological methods in the treatment of congenital heart diseases is increasing rapidly.

For example, many valve or vascular stenosis can now be opened in the  angio laboratories without the need for surgery. In addition, some vascular openings and intra-cardiac holes can be closed without the need for surgery. Treatments with interventional cardiological methods provide the patients with advantages such as avoiding the risks associated with surgery, decreasing hospital stays and no incision scars. Nevertheless, it should not be forgotten that these procedures carry a small risk of life.

CHILDREN'S HEART HEALTH AND DISEASES SURGERY

Cardiac catheterization and angiography procedures for more than 5000 children
Infants suspected of having congenital heart disease are performed echocardiography in the womb (fetal) by obstetricians, these babies are followed up together with obstetricians, and if necessary, some interventions can also be performed in the womb.
It is ensured that babies with congenital heart disease spend their birth and postnatal periods in the best possible way. In intensive care units, all necessary diagnostic assessments are made at the bedside and necessary treatments are started quickly.
In our angiography unit, angiography procedures are successfully applied to patients in the childhood age group, including newborns. These procedures can be for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.
Cardiac catheterization and angiography procedures have been performed on 4,514 children in our center. Approximately 2,804 of these are therapeutic procedures.
These procedures include closing the holes in the heart that we call ASD and VSD, opening the stenosis in the valves with a balloon, expanding the stenosis in the large vessels with the help of a balloon or stent, and closing the vascular openings between the vessels that tire the extra heart.
In our center, all current therapeutic procedures in the world are successfully applied.
The cases that require surgery are evaluated in the surgical council and the most appropriate surgery is planned and applied smoothly. Surgeons, anesthesiologists and pediatric heart specialists work in coordination in the intensive care unit during the postoperative period and in the service follow-ups.
In our center, 5,500 children have had heart surgeries so far.
Our aim is, to provide high standards of diagnosis and treatment opportunities for children with heart disease, to carry our patients and their families to a healthier future with our team of well-trained and experienced pediatric cardiology specialists, congenital heart surgeons, anesthetists and pediatricians experienced in congenital heart diseases.

SYMPTOMS OF HEART DISEASES IN BABIES OR CHILDREN

Symptoms of heart diseases in children may differ significantly depending on the type of disease. Even the same disease may not give similar signs in every child.
Children with significant congenital heart disease usually reveal themselves within the first few months after birth.
Babies with congenital heart diseases rarely show symptoms in short terms and as emergencies.
It is rare with babies that soon after birth,  severe low blood pressure and impaired blood circulation can be associated with an emergency heart problem.
In non-serious congenital heart diseases, most of the time the child does not have any complaints. This type of diseases are more common to show up in routine examinations performed as a result of hearing a "murmur" in the heart.

SUSPECT OF HEART DISEASES IN BABIES OR CHILDREN

In babies, bruising (lips, tongue and nail bottoms) may be the first sign of congenital heart disease.
However, frequent breathing, difficulty in breathing, not eating, not being able to gain weight /weight loss and excessive sweating are also among the other symptoms of heart disease.
We put the heart diseases seen in childhood in two main groups,  congenital and acquired (seen later).
Unlike adults, congenital heart diseases constitute the majority of heart diseases seen in childhood.
These children are born with some structural defects in the heart. Structural disorders are the result of disturbances in the normal development of the heart in the very early stages of pregnancy (the heart completes its development in the 7th week of pregnancy), often when the mother is not even aware of her pregnancy.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF CHILDHOOD HEART DISEASES?

Although often the factors that disrupt the normal development of the heart are unknown, it has been seen that some viral diseases (measles, rubella, mumps, some microbes that cause colds, etc.) may play a role.
In addition, inheritance (with genes) and chromosomal abnormalities (heart disease risk in children with Down syndrome is 50%) are among the factors that increase the risk of congenital heart disease.
It has been reported that some medications (some medications used in the treatment of epilepsy and nervous diseases) and alcohol used during pregnancy, especially in the first 3 months, cause heart development disorders.
However, it is not always possible to know the reasons why a child develops the disease. Therefore, families and parents should not feel guilty if there is no proven cause.

TREATMENT WITH INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGICAL METHODS

Nowadays, the role of interventional cardiological methods in the treatment of congenital heart diseases is increasing rapidly. For example, many valve or vascular stenosis can now be opened in the angio laboratory without the need for surgery. In addition, some vascular openings and intra-cardiac holes can be closed without the need for surgery. In recent years, some of the heart valves have been placed by catheterization method.

Treatment with interventional cardiological methods provides the patients with advantages such as avoiding the risks associated with surgery, decreasing hospital stays and no incision scars. It should not be forgotten that these procedures although little, are still life-threatening.

While talking to your doctor, it is your most natural right to get detailed information about the treatment planned for your child, its alternatives, benefits and harms.

Our hospital is a center that has a team of experienced pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and anesthesiologists who have been trained specifically in the diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart diseases, and provides quality service to patients using the latest technology and facilities.

Diagnosis and treatment of such patients in such centers is of vital importance in terms of early and correct diagnoses and timely planning and implementation of correct treatments.
